ME Dept. Hosts Inspiring High School Delegation Visit

KFUPM Mechanical Engineering Department Hosts Inspiring High School Delegation Visit

Dhahran, Saudi Arabia — On Monday, September 29, the Mechanical Engineering Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) opened its doors to a delegation of approximately 35 high school students and 2 supervisors from Al-Tufail bin Amr Secondary School. The visit, held from 10:00 to 11:00 am, aimed to introduce young minds to the world of mechanical engineering, spark interest in STEM disciplines, and strengthen ties between schools and the university.

A Collaborative Effort

This activity was the fruit of joint efforts by three key units:

  • Deanship of Student Affairs: Responsible for communication, logistics, and ensuring the visit ran smoothly and comfortably for all attendees.
  • Visit Club: Organized the agenda, campus tours, volunteer coordination, and student interactions.
  • Mechanical Engineering Department (ME): Prepared detailed presentations, showcased labs and facilities, and guided the students through hands-on experiences.
  • Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE): Organized lab experiments to be showcased for the students.

Such collaboration reflects KFUPM’s commitment to outreach and community engagement, consistent with its broader mission of “experiencing KFUPM first-hand” for prospective students and guests.

Welcome & Orientation

After a warm reception, a departmental representative introduced KFUPM’s vision and gave an overview of mechanical engineering. They touched on how mechanical engineering integrates with real-world systems—from energy systems and manufacturing to robotics and environmental control—drawing from the department’s mission to “provide world-class education and address evolving industry and societal needs.”

Lab Tour & Demonstrations

Students were guided through specialized labs to introduce some of the topics they’re expected to master upon joining the ME Department. In one instance, students looked into a microscope setup, observed microstructures, and learned about materials science in engineering applications. The images show keen observation and engagement during these sessions.

 Q&A and Reflection

At the end, students met with department faculty. Many asked about academic paths, degree requirements, research opportunities, and how mechanical engineering at KFUPM prepares graduates for industry and innovation.

 Institutional Context & Reputation

The Mechanical Engineering Department at KFUPM boasts a long and distinguished history, being one of the university’s oldest departments since its foundation in 1387 H (1966 CE). Over time, it has grown to serve nearly 1,500 students across undergraduate and graduate programs, and carries ABET accreditation.

KFUPM itself is known for linking academic excellence with societal impact, and publishes official “visit KFUPM” initiatives to welcome prospective students and guests. The success of the visit was made possible by the dedication of all parties involved. From administrative coordination by the Deanship, event planning by the Visit Club, to the hands-on preparation by ME faculty and students—each played an essential role.
